Insects are invertebrate animals that are entirely classified because of their segmented body, external skeleton (exoskeleton), compound eyes, winged adult forms, and tri-body regions (head, thorax, and abdomen).
Mealworms are insects. The widely famous worms are the immature form of a beetle with scientific name, Tenebrio molitor. It belongs to an order with hard forewings, geniculate antennae, and chewing mouthparts.
This picture shows parts of the larval’s mouth. As we can observe, these insects are generalists and feed on almost anything (even plastic). The larval eyes or termed as compound eyes are found on each side of the head. Antennae are also found protruding near the mouth which are mainly used for sensing food. Mouthparts consist of the mandible, labrum, clypeus, labia, which are generally like a big teeth for crushing and tearing food in a sideways/pliers-like motion. There are also a term called maxillae or finger-like structures that help in putting food into the mouth. The leg and claw are attached to the thorax which functions for locomotion.
These are the basics of entomology and we will discuss some of it in the next posts.
